Melissa Phillips Reading focuses her practice on defending companies and individuals in civil tort litigation, primarily medical malpractice, product liability, and general personal injury defense. Ms. Reading has defended her clients against a broad range of claims including professional and simple negligence, fraud, battery, strict liability. Ms. Reading has represented healthcare providers and Fortune 500 corporations from pre-suit investigation through appeal, as well as assisting clients in interactions with the civil legal system where they are not directly sued, such as navigating through depositions, responding to subpoenas, requests for records, and government investigations. She is an experienced litigator, regularly appearing in hearings and depositions, and second-chairing several jury trials.
Prior to joining Owen, Gleaton, Egan, Jones & Sweeney, LLP, Ms. Reading was an associate at a national law firm in Atlanta. She has been recognized as a “Rising Star” (in healthcare and civil litigation defense) in “Georgia Super Lawyers.” She began her legal career serving as a law clerk to the Honorable G. Ernest Tidwell, United States District Court, Northern District of Georgia.
Ms. Reading obtained her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, with honors, with a B.A. in history and economics. Ms. Reading received her J.D. from the Emory University School of Law in 2004, where she was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as notes and comments editor for the Emory International Law Journal.
Ms. Reading is a member of several professional and community organizations, including the State Bar of Georgia, the Georgia Association of Women Lawyers, the Dekalb County Bar Association, CLM, Defense Research Institute and the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association. She serves on the Board of the Women in the Profession Section of the Atlanta Bar Association, through which she initiated a pro bono partnership that has assisted low-income women cancer patients with their legal needs for the past four years. Ms. Reading is also a member of First Baptist Church of Decatur.
